US claims to have thwarted Houthi rebels smuggling Iranian weapons

The United States has said it thwarted an attempt by Houthi rebels to smuggle Iranian weapons.

According to Arab News, the US Department of Justice said yesterday that US naval forces have seized large stockpiles of weapons from two ships during routine maritime security operations in the Arabian Sea. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards had planned to send the shipment.

The seized Iranian weapons include 171 surface-to-air missiles and eight anti-tank missiles being sent to Houthi militias in Yemen.

The U.S. Department of Justice says about 1.1 million barrels of Iranian petroleum products were also seized from four foreign-flagged tankers in or around the Arabian Sea en route to Venezuela.

Matthew G. Olson, assistant attorney general for the U.S. Department of Justice's National Security Division, said the U.S. move was a major blow to the Iranian government and the Revolutionary Guards' support network.

According to the court order, the proceeds from the sale of confiscated petroleum products for more than  26 million were given to the State Fund for Victims of Terrorism.
