Indian PM mourns death of CDS Bipin Rawat

New Delhi : India’s Prime Minister Narinda Modi on Wednesday mourned death of Chief of Defense Staff General Bipen Rawat, who accidently died in a chopper crash on Wednesday evening.

“I am deeply anguished by the helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu in which we have lost Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and other security personnel of the armed forces. They served India with utmost diligence. My thoughts are with the bereaved families” wrote Prime Minister Modi on twitter.

In a subsequent tweet, PM Modi lauded Gen Rawat’s services to the country. “Gen Bipin Rawat was an outstanding soldier. A true patriot, he greatly contributed to modernizing our armed forces and security apparatus. His insights and perspectives on strategic matters were exceptional. His passing away has saddened me deeply” Prime Minister Modi wrote on twitter.

In another tweet, Narindra Modi said that Gen Rawat’s experience and defence expertise were exemplary. “As India’s first CDS, Gen Rawat worked on diverse aspects relating to our armed forces including defence reforms. He brought with him rich experience of serving in the army” he said, adding that “India will never forget his exceptional service”

India's Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat died in a helicopter crash in the southern state of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, the air force said. The reason for the crash was not immediately known.

Gen Rawat was India's first chief of defence staff, a position that the government established in 2019, and was seen as close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The 63-year-old was travelling with his wife and other senior officers in the Russian-made Mi-17 chopper, which crashed near its destination in Tamil Nadu.
